Forum Tech Tip: How to Link to a Post
The Problem
Let’s say you want to link to another topic posted in the forum as a reference to whatever it is you are discussing.
That’s easy to do.
But what if the topic thread is two or three pages long? How do you specify the exact location to which you are trying to refer?
Well, here’s a solution to that problem.
Example
Here is a general link to the topic “Research to help you narrow down your choices“: http://www.underachieverlife.com/portal/Forum/…/view/Topic/postid/1920/Default.aspx
That’s well and good, but let’s say you want to refer to Caro’s Summary of The Research Process.
Then you use a link such as the following:
http://www.underachieverlife.com/portal/Forum/…/view/topic/postid/1920/Default.aspx#2199
Notice that the entire link is the same except for the #2199 at the end? That is a unique identifier for that particular entry.
Solution
Here is a description of how to find that identifier.
If you are using Firefox browser -
1. Highlight only the the Date and Time text at the top of the portion of the post you are interested in,
- Place your mouse cursor to the left of the Date and Time.
07/04/2006 12:58 PM
- Hold the left button and drag to select the text.
- Right click and select “View Selection Source”.
You will see something like this,
< td class=“afsubrow”>< a name=“2199″>a>07/02/2006 9:10 PMtd>
Take the number portion, 2199, prepend a # sign to it, and place it at the end of the http:// link, and that’s it!
