Jason Moffatt’s Good Niche Bad Niche Videos - Niche Marketing Notes

December 30th, 2006 · No Comments · Internet Marketing

Since many of you will be watching the “Good Niche Bad Niche” videos (get them Free: NicheDynasty.com/giveaway/), I wanted to give you the notes I took from them for myself. I’ve included the time stamp at certain intervals so you can review the videos if you want and find the precise location at which that topic was discussed.

One of the questions that you may be asking is, “Do I have to be passionate about a Niche to be successful at it?”

Jason says, “No you don’t,” but I would have to say almost the opposite on this point.

The reason is that if I am going to be spending time and energy, then I want to feel it is something worthwhile. My reasoning is that there are so many viable niches available, you might as well start with one for which you have a passion. I believe this will help you to be successful.

Just be sure to do the proper research to determine if the niche is good from a marketing perspective before you spend too much time with it.

The main point is really that you don’t want to work in a niche ONLY because it is your passion. There have to be people who want to spend money for what you are offering.

O.K. so here are the notes:
(the numbers on the left are the time intervals as shown in the Camtasia video.)

Bad Niche: Bull Riding

2:20
Q: How many searches in Overture or WordTracker are recommended per month for a viable niche keyword?
A: In this video Jason recommends about 30,000 for your primary keyword.
(Keep in mind that when SEO’s talk about a “Keyword” this can refer to either one word OR a “keyword phrase”. SEO = Search Engine Optimization expert.)

4:30
Q: When talking about Google search results, what is the difference between the Left Side and the Right Side?
A: The Left Side has Free Listings (Organic search results).
The Right Side has Pay per click (AdWords) advertising.

5:15
Q: What type of ads do you want to see on the right side of the search results to indicate a good niche possibility?
A: You want to find “How To”, “Info”, and “Digital” products in your niche.

5:40
Q: What was wrong with the example Bull Riding product page?
A: There was no “Direct Response” marketing except a phone number.
There was no place for the visitor to sign up, such as a lead capture form.
There was no affiliate program. Affiliates are a great way to help you market
and sell your product.

6:20
Q: What is the Social Proof in this sales page?
A: In this case the author provides evidence that he is well liked and competent in his field which is Bull Riding.

7:00
Q: Why is it a good thing to see competition for your niche keywords?
A: Seeing competition is a good thing. It means there is money to be made and it’s
profitable to place your ad for those keywords.

8:00
Be sure to check out Yahoo.

8:50
Check out Amazon also.

Q: Why is “Bull Riding” not a good Niche?
A: 8:20 Few searches on the keyword phrase, “Bull Riding”.
No one is selling Information products for this keyword.

8:50
Q: Why is Amazon.com not a good way to monetize your niche?
A: 9:20 Affiliate commissions are very low for these products.

9:50
However, you may try to test the niche by trying to sell the bull riding
book at $39. If you can get visitors and make sales then it may be
worth while after all. But in this case, it is clear this would not be worth
the effort or cost of advertising.

11:25
Q: Why do you want to see other people placing ads for your niche keywords?
A: They are getting a return on their investment
You will also want to find other affiliate products to sell from your competitors.

Good Niche: Horse Racing

In the next video, Good Niche, Jason performs research on the keyword phrase,
“Horse Racing”.

The first thing Jason does is look at the Overture Keyword Selector Tool
Here he finds that the term “Horse Racing” returns 119,000 searches for one month.
A related term, “Horse Betting”, also returns 50,000 searches.

Next, Jason looks at Google Pay Per Click for the niche keywords.
Look at the ads and you can see two information products that people are selling.
One even has an affiliate program.

4:10
Then Jason takes a look at the Overture Bid Tool.
He wants to see how much people are paying per click.
This will tell you if there is good money to be made. The higher the bid, the more
they are making. Jason likes to see 60 cents to $2. However, the low bids allows you to place your own ads fairly cheaply and generate lots of traffic to your lead capture page.

5:30
Next is Amazon.com.
You don’t want to see thousands of books. Even a few hundred books available on
Amazon may indicate that there is too much opportunity for people will just get a book
from a store or at Amazon.com.

6:20
Here Jason presents a good discussion of the Clickbank.com Marketplace.
You want to see what others are selling to get an idea if they are successful or not.
This is a good indicator of your chances of success.

7:20 Gravity = How many other people affiliates are selling the product as affiliates.
This is a good indicator of how well the product is selling.

8:00 Percent Referred = This tells you what percentage of all sales are coming from affiliates. You want to see this above 50%.

Again, this means that people must be making money even though they may be spending money for their own pay per click advertising to drive traffic to the product page or their own referral page.

8:40 The down side is there are a large number of products for Horse Racing.
In order to compensate for this, you would have to analyze the top sellers and see if you can get more visitors and create a better converting sales page.

12:00
Do more research before you place your ppc ads.

12:30
How long has the site been in business?

Use the Wayback Machine or look at the Whois information with www.DomainTools.com.

13:25
Look at the site’s Back Links to see how well it has been promoted around the internet community.

Summary: From the research, Horse Racing is a much better niche than Bull Riding.
